You’ve probably bought a few pairs in the past but without ever considering what makes chinos, well, chinos! Before going any further, be sure to see the range of designer 6th Sense Chinos at EJ Menswear.

As with many fashion garments, chinos have a military heritage. With its iconic khaki hue and long-lasting cotton, they offer both comfort and versatility. Nowadays, you can find chinos in a huge variety of cuts, styles and colours.

One of the features that makes chinos so popular is their mid-rise waistline which is similar to a pair of jeans. They are normally cut in a slim fit, but contemporary variations see straight, tapered and skinny fit versions available. Most often worn to sit on the ankle, they can also be styled to roll up, creating a larger gap between the trousers and shoes. This works really well for showing off high-top trainers or going sockless.

Before being known as chinos, there were simply known as khakis. During the 1800s, a British Lieutenant called Sir Harry Lumsden was seeking dying methods to change the bright white uniform trousers of his troops into a duller yellowy-brownish colour. He named the resulting khaki, the Hindi word for dust. The newly dyed trousers were soon adopted across the army when the benefits of increased camouflage became apparent.

So, how did they become known as chinos? The khaki trousers began to be called chinos during the Spanish American War in 1898 and comes from the Spanish word for China. The cotton twill material used to make the trousers was indeed sourced from China. The material was adopted by the U.S Military as part of standard uniform during the early 20th century.
